Yom Kippor Service at Occupy Wall Street
I am not in control of the editorial use of my images. As a photographer working digitally in the 21st Century, I take pictures and within minutes are then syndicated out and around the media world, to be used to in return for payment. The copyright to my work will always be mine, but once an image enters the public domain there is a certain loss of ownership. Images can take on a life of their own, so while I can't control other people's editorial output, I do have this blog.
In contrast to the horrid image highlighted in my previous blog, I'd like to share this image of a Yom Kippur prayer service held on the same evening.
Rabbi Ezra Weinberg and a group of Jewish activists held a Kol Nidre prayer service in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protest outside Brown Brothers Harriman in downtown Manhattan.
Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement in the Jewish calendar and is the holiest day of the year. Traditionally one is expected to refrain from eating and drinking and wearing leather. This year was extra special as it fell on the Sabbath. Normally fasting on the sabbath is not allowed, but is upheld if the two coincide and is considered to be the Shabbat Shabbaton or Shabbat of Shabbats.
There was a healthy mix of Jews and non-Jews, and plenty of passers by who would stop for a moment out of intrigue. The crowd joined in with certain blessing in chorus and the occasion was genuinely heart warming and moving.
